Translate the fertilizer grade, guaranteed analysis, release sources, application directions, and warnings into a safe amount for a measured Bermuda lawn.
Quick answer
Start with the grade, such as 15-4-9. Those numbers state percent by weight of total nitrogen, available phosphate, and soluble potash in that order. They do not by themselves tell you release speed, application rate, or whether the product fits the soil test.
Next read the guaranteed analysis, directions, site restrictions, watering instructions, protective-equipment requirements, storage directions, and warnings. The label is the controlling instruction for that product.
Translate the three numbers
A 15-4-9 product contains 15 percent total nitrogen, 4 percent available phosphate expressed as P2O5, and 9 percent soluble potash expressed as K2O. Ten pounds of that product contains 1.5 pounds of nitrogen, 0.4 pound of phosphate, and 0.9 pound of potash.
Do not call the middle and last numbers elemental phosphorus and potassium in a calculation. Fertilizer grades use the regulated phosphate and potash conventions printed on the label.
Read the nitrogen breakdown
The guaranteed analysis may list ammoniacal nitrogen, urea nitrogen, water-insoluble nitrogen, slowly available nitrogen, or controlled-release nitrogen. That breakdown helps explain how quickly the turf response may occur and how burn or loss risk should be managed.
A bag can blend quick- and slow-release sources. Granular does not automatically mean slow release, and liquid does not automatically mean quick release. Compare the chemistry and percentages, not just the marketing name.
Calculate a lawn rate
Product per 1,000 square feet equals the target nutrient rate divided by that nutrient's decimal percentage. To supply 0.5 pound of nitrogen with a 20 percent nitrogen product, divide 0.5 by 0.20: the result is 2.5 pounds of product per 1,000 square feet.
Then multiply by the measured lawn area divided by 1,000. Check what phosphorus, potassium, and other nutrients that product amount also supplies. A nitrogen calculation does not justify nutrients the soil does not need.
Find the directions that change the plan
Confirm the labeled turf species or site, maximum application rate, frequency, annual limit, temperature restrictions, irrigation instructions, equipment, and whether granules must be removed from hard surfaces. Combination products may add pesticide restrictions and timing requirements.
The spreader-setting table is a starting point, not proof of output. Equipment wear, walking speed, product size, and density vary. Calibrate over a known area and never use calibration to exceed the labeled rate.
Use the soil test to choose the grade
Nitrogen usually drives the application calculation for an established Bermuda lawn, while phosphorus and potassium choices should be guided by the soil report and local recommendations. A balanced-looking grade is not automatically balanced for the soil.
Secondary nutrients and micronutrients can also appear on the label. Their presence is not evidence of deficiency. Select them for a supported need, and count every nutrient source in the program.

- Separate quick-, slow-, and controlled-release nitrogen.
- Confirm the product is labeled for the intended site and use.
- Calculate all nutrients delivered at the planned rate.
- Review timing, irrigation, safety, storage, and cleanup directions.
- Calibrate, apply, and record the exact product and lot.
