Consistency preserves the green canopy

When the lawn repeatedly grows well above its maintained height, the lower portion becomes increasingly stemmy and shaded. The next low cut removes the upper green layer and exposes tan tissue. That makes the surface look thin even when runners remain present near the soil.

Shorter intervals remove less material and keep the leaf layer closer to the target. Visually, this produces a more uniform surface. Agronomically, it also avoids the repeated shock of large leaf removal.

Lower height creates a frequency requirement

A low target leaves less vertical room before the one-third trigger. At 0.75 inch, the trigger is near 1.125 inches; at 1.5 inches, it is near 2.25 inches. Under the same growth rate, the lower lawn reaches its trigger sooner.

This is why low mowing and frequent mowing are linked. Lowering height without increasing frequency usually produces scalping and color loss, not a reliably denser lawn. If time is fixed, height must absorb part of the tradeoff.

Bermuda has poor shade tolerance. Raising height may preserve more leaf area in partial shade, but mowing frequency cannot replace missing sunlight. How to evaluate density honestly

Do not rely only on color immediately after mowing. Look straight down at the canopy and track visible soil in the same marked locations. Photograph at the same time of day and height. If you want a stronger experiment, count shoots or intersections in a fixed small frame.

Also track confounding changes: fertilizer, irrigation, rainfall, PGR, leveling, traffic, and mower type. Without those notes, a before-and-after photo can show improvement but cannot prove frequent mowing caused all of it.
